Cepheus/Traveller: Blake’s 7 Crew

Wherein your humble scribe presents stats in Cepheus Universal (which isn’t Classic Traveller, but is close enough for a BBC budget) for some universally cherished characters.

With the fresh news that the beloved Blake’s 7 is up for a modern retelling, I have finally given in and written up the protagonists of august journey into the heights of BBC sci-fi television (and, yes, the lows of BBC sci-fi television piggy banks).

The characters presented here are humble, representing their first appearance within the show. This being Traveller Cepheus, the characters are pretty loose and pretty squishy. They’ll get stronger, but only so much.

I’ve left off money & possessions since, for the original six at least, they essentially have nothing but the clothes on their backs when we meet them. Once the action gets underway, though, one can pretty well assume they’re all kitted out with weapons and vacc suits and all of that other goodness.

So, without further ado, here they are. Other interpretations and different approaches are certainly possible. These are merely mine.

Avon, Vila and Dayna are the key players here. The rest aside from Blake and Tarrant are meatshields. Personally I’d toss Blake and Tarrant from the airlock. Tarrant for being irritating (and a bad actor), and Blake for being a bloody useless leader.

Loved the series though, despite the dodgy sets, naff special effects, and Blake and Tarrant.

Umm…I might think about statting these people up in Garnett’s Space Pulp.

Your ruthless assessment of the crew would please even Servalan Sleer herself. Take a squad of mutoids and get to it!

I was just looking over Space Pulp before bed last night with an eye to just that. Race ya! 🙂

I need to give the original more than a cursory re-watch. I love British sci-fi, and especially from a social commentary angle!

I’ve only just watched it properly for the first time, myself. The newer releases are nice and sharp.

The most recent of those offer the choice between the original space scenes and “updated” space scenes. The updated are fine, but they don’t really add anything for an old head who’s fine with how things looked back when the world was young.

Regardless of approach, it is 100% worth a serious watch. There’s social commentary meat aplenty. And it turns out Tanith Lee wrote an episode or two, even.
