(My Dreams Of) Gaming Plans For 2012 (Because You Care)

So the Thanksgiving game happened. It was a WWII commando raid using a Mini Six/D6 Adventure mashup and it was a blast. But I’m not here to talk about it. Not right now, anyway. I’m gunning to do that a little later on, when I’m ready to post the materials I put together for the game. Nope, instead I’m here to talk about what I’m hoping to run next.

First up, sometime during the Winter Solstice Holidays break, I’m hoping to pull off a BASH game for a friend, his 13 year old son, and maybe a few other folks. I’m currently thinking Golden Age/WWII supers kicking fascist ass in Europe. But the ideas are swirling and unformed at this point, so who knows what (if anything) will ultimately come to pass?

After that, I’m pondering a few possibilities:

  • Some kind of hard(-ish) SciFi using good ol’ Classic Traveller and some Stars Without Number action
  • Labyrinth Lord/AEC romps through either the Against The Giants series or maybe Castle Amber, The Lost City, or some other classic modules
  • A BRP– (or possibly BoL-) based, Mythic Russia-fueled, Russian fantasy game
  • A Mini Six (with add-ons from Open D6) or Mercenaries, Spies, And Private Eyes 80s-style espionage game
  • A Call of Cthulhu Dreamlands miniseries (probably not until the CoC game I’m playing in wraps up, though)
  • A BRP/Renaissance (or maybe Tunnels & Trolls or Honor + Intrigue) black powder fantasy adventure
  • Droids. Seriously. Either with the original rules (unlikely) or with something else (D6, maybe?)

just to name a few (in no particular order). All of this is subject to change (i.e., my whims and interests) and player buy-in, of course.

That’s Great And All, But What About Giving Us Some Sweet Gaming Content, Pao?

Yeah, I know. My content output has absolutely tanked of late (and, honestly, not-so-late). I’m struggling with that, really. Part of me wants to be cranking out stuff like I had been, but another part just isn’t inclined to spend the time on it. So it’s not quite burnout, per se. It’s more a case of conflicting interests and such. So to answer the question that I asked on no one in particular’s behalf, “Reply hazy. Try again later.”

Yummy! Please do post about these if you ever get them them running.

Ah, these all sound fantastic. To run Castle Amber again . . .

I picked up the Dreamlands PDF this weekend. Really good stuff, which I think would work with BoL if the PC’s power level was slightly reduced. Was this an inspiration for Nogoloth?

I’m not quite sure I’d be gunning for the BoL Dreamlands with what I’ve got in mind this time. I’m actually hoping I can tag out with the current CoC GM once we’ve made our way through Masks of Nyarlathotep (*if* we make it) and have any surviving characters encounter the Dreamlands, so it would mean sticking with CoC as the ruleset. But I’m more than willing to believe that little hybridization idea would work like a charm.

And though I’ve never owned any of the Chaosium Dreamlands products, there’s no doubt that that part of the HPL ouvre is the major influence/inspiration for Nogoloth. I’ve always adored the Dream Cycle and felt that it was one of the greatest fantasy worlds ever put together. The idea of getting to explore it more (or run people though the exploring) is golden to me.

And yes, running Castle Amber would be an utter delight!

    Castle Amber/ BRP/ BoL/Traveller!

You guys are mirroring my personal gaming wishlist 😀

I’ve been running a “Fall One-shot Festival”, the schedule is hosed, but we’ve got it started. Ran a short Swords&Wizardry: White Box scenario for a small group a few weeks ago. A couple of weeks ago we generated characters for Classic Traveller, short scenario on deck: either Annic Nova or Flare Star.

The rest of the lineup is BoL, Fiasco, Tunnels & Trolls, MSPE (if I can ever get my box set back from my buddy.) and a few other games I’ve always wanted to run.

I’ve always wanted to tyr a bunch of different games but it just kept getting shelved. This year will be the year that I run as many of the different games I’ve always wanted to try as possible! (I hope: players seem to be on board though.)

Castle Amber has a special place in my heart. I’ve had a copy since the 80s and looked through it fondly many times: but I’ve never had the opportunity to run it. I’m going to wedge it into the play schedule for spring maybe. It’s too awesome to not run at least once.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, G-Man and Venomous Pao!

Merry & Happy to you and yours as well, Gregarious Monk! I hope you get to run every one of those delightful games, amigo.

I must confess that although I’ve been quite staunch in my resistance to “indie” games, Fiasco has caught my eye of late. It’s only a matter of time until I spring for the core book and make a run at it. Some of the folks I play with will never, ever go for it. But I’ve got enough other players that I think I can make it happen. Have you given it a go already? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

I’d also love to hear how the Traveller game goes once you get to it. Those are both great adventures you’re considering!

I’m not much of an “indie” gamer either, although I consider the older games to be about as “indie” as you can get. BoL is innovative, but I don’t think it has that whole “indie” vibe either. I enjoy almost any kind of game, but some of the “numberless” and diceless games just don’t offer me what I need (the *clackity* of a handful of dice on wood).

We haven’t tried Fiasco yet. The whole do-it-yourself-Coen-Brothers-movie sold me on the game. And the GMless thing sounded good for a night of just messin’ around.

I picked up enough black and white d6s for a game, but it’s a
tough sell with the gamers in my group. I think I’ve got enough now to have a decent game (3 or 4) and it’ll get played sometime in January or February.

There’s a site/blog for the games I’m/we’re thinking of running (subject to whim 😉 ):

        I’ll keep you posted!

I appreciate a good story as much as the next guy, but when I sit down to game I typically want to feel the game at least a bit. Though I’m also very much *not* what I believe the theorists call a “gamist.” So the super story-oriented indie stuff definitely doesn’t tickle my fancy much. But Fiasco (from what I’ve seen, anyway) looks just to awesome not to try. For me it’s that “make your own Coen Brothers movie as well 🙂

Seems like a nice site you’ve got set up for your group, GMonk (to differentiate you from our other GM, the one they call G-Man)! I hope you can herd those cats into playing the games you’re itching to play!
